The Library at LSE is the world’s largest social sciences library. The Maughan Library & Information Services Centre is one of four main library sites for King’s College London, housed in the first fireproof building ever designed. Just a short walk apart, both these recently redeveloped libraries deliver a thoroughly 21st century service from historic buildings. But inside they couldn’t be more different. Gaunt Francis Architects retained many fascinating original features at King’s. The radical, modern transformation at LSE (to a Foster and Partners design) is dominated by a central spiral culminating in a partially glazed dome.
Further information about these libraries is available on the web at:

The event will begin with lunch on 18 November and end with lunch on 19th. Library tours and presentations will, in addition to building issues, cover such themes as integrating separate collections (King's); maintaining library services while moving out / moving back (LSE); and fund raising.
A wine reception and dinner at a central London restaurant is included in the evening of the 18th.
The cost of the event is £120 (excluding overnight accommodation, which is to be arranged by delegates themselves. The organisers can recommend some local hotels). All welcome.
This event follows the success of recent visits to the University of Abertay (2002), the University of Hertfordshire (2000) and the University of Westminster Harrow campus (1997).
