The web sites listed on this page will be useful for managers responsible for staff development.

  • The Academic and National Library Training Co-operative
    Eleven libraries in Ireland and Ulster are members of this consortium. The Co-operative provides training to supplement each institution's own programme. Full details of the annual programme are given on the web site.

  • Avon Universities Libraries in Co-operation
    AULIC aims to share staff development information, expertise and good practice. They hold joint conferences and training events and provide other opportunities. Membership: Bath University, Bath Spa University, Bristol University and the University of the West of England.

  • Bailer
    The British Association for Information & Library Education and Research includes all teaching and research staff in the Information and Library Schools in the United Kingdom and Ireland. The association's main concerns centre on curriculum development, research issues and improving communication between those involved in LIS education, practitioners and the information profession at large.

  • CPD25: Training & Development for HE Libraries in the London Region
    CPD25 will improve services to library users and will promote and facilitate the work of the M25 Consortium and the University Libraries Committee as appropriate through the development and training of staff.

  • CILIP (Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals) - Careers
    Includes information on places to study, qualifications for Library Assistants, financial assistance, and training opportunities.

  • HESDA
    The Higher Education Staff Development Agency provides a range of services to member institutions to develop the skills, training and qualifications of people working in higher education. It is committed to staff development and training provision across the UK higher education sector. The site includes information and guidance on Investors in People in Higher Education. It also includes a list of HESDA courses, seminars and workshops. Access to some areas of the site is restricted to staff working in institutions which subscribe to HESDA membership services.

  • ILT
    The Institute for Learning and Teaching in Higher Education is the professional body for all who teach and support learning in higher education in the UK. The site includes information about joining ILT, events, publications and links to useful resources.

  • isNTO
    The isNTO is the National Training Organisation for archives, library and information services, and records management. Their site includes information on qualifications and standards in these fields, and brief details of projects currently being undertaken by isNTO.

  • NorthWest Academic Libraries Consortium (NoWAL)
    NoWAL offers a programme of events and opportunities for professional and personal development. The web site includes the current programme, booking form and information about the trainers and speakers.

  • SALCTG (Scottish Academic Libraries Cooperative Training Group)
    This group aims to identify common training needs and to organise training events to satisfy them. SALCTG currently has 27 members including all the higher education libraries in Scotland.

  • SCONUL Job Evaluation Database
    Hosted by University of Dundee, this database shows which job evaluation scheme (if any) an institution is adopting.

  • UCISA-SDG
    The University and Colleges Information Systems Association Staff Development Group "is responsible for facilitating and delivering high quality information services training to staff and to enhance the personal development of staff working in IT/IS/Computer Centres".

  • WHELF (Wales Higher Education Libraries Forum)
    WHELF and HEWIT (the group of IT managers for Welsh HEIs) have formed a staff development group (WHISD) which organises training events for members and identifies good practice. All 13 higher education institutions in Wales are members.
