Staff Development Award

4 June, 2003

SCONUL (Society of College, National and University Libraries) is offering £1,000 to help realise a library staff development idea. Application forms are available at www.sconul.ac.uk/activities/staffing and must be submitted by 30 June 2003.

The SCONUL award for staff development is open to anyone employed in one of the national libraries, or a library of a university in the UK or Ireland, or a library of a UK college of higher education. It is also open to students hoping to work in these institutions. The award will support an individual, group or team to pursue, for example:

  • a development event
  • an exchange or visits to other libraries
  • a conference paper
  • an article on staff development for publication
  • research into any aspect of staff development
  • a new staffing initiative

This year, SCONUL is particularly (but not exclusively) interested in projects that address the impact on staff development of:

  • widening participation in higher education
  • implementation of the new disability legislation

Previous projects to have benefited from this SCONUL award include:

  • a training event and publication on supporting library users with disabilities
  • training materials on electronic resources in law
  • using VLEs to deliver development activities to part-time staff
