SCONUL Autumn Conference 2026: Leading Libraries in a Changing World: Value, Trust and Transformation

Academic and research libraries are operating in a period of profound change, shaped by generative AI, evolving expectations, increasing pressure to demonstrate value, and wider questions about trust, truth and the role of institutions in society. This conference brings library leaders together to explore how the sector can respond with confidence and purpose. Dr Stephen Gow will share findings from his extensive study of students’ experiences of navigating the generative AI landscape in UK higher education, alongside sessions examining how libraries can articulate their value and services in a changing environment and the role they can play in supporting truth and democracy.

The conference offers a valuable space to step back from immediate operational pressures, engage with evidence and emerging practice, learn from colleagues and consider how libraries can shape—and not simply respond to—the changes ahead. Please see here for more information.

The SCONUL Autumn Conference, Leading Libraries in a Changing World: Value, Trust and Transformation, will take place at The Studio in Birmingham on Friday 13 November from 10am to 4pm (registration from 9.30am). Please email sconul@sconul.ac.uk for registration details.

Feedback from delegates on our last two conferences:

Thanks to SCONUL colleagues for putting it together and hosting. It's the first event I've attended in my new-ish management team role and I felt very welcome.

Only to say well done on the programme and organisation. It was a positive day and was well worth attending.

Thank you to the SCONUL team for an excellent day. Well done!

Thank you for organising this. I always get so much out of the chance to speak to other directors and deputies and hear all the exciting things happening in the sector despite turbulent times.

Thank you for bringing librarians together -it feels more important than ever.

Really enjoyable day, looking forward to the next one.

Thank you for a very inspiring day.
